MIPH Internship Program

For over 25 years and for the reasons listed below, MIPH finds value in a structured internship program experience on site.

For interns, the benefit includes quality exposure and involvement in a wide range of cutting-edge public health and safety issues, with oversight by trained and experienced staff.

The following document is an attempt to communicate objectives, process, roles and responsibilities, and a management plan for continuing successful internship experiences at MIPH.

Program Objectives

  1. To enhance MIPH mission and programming while advancing the public health field via new learning.
  2. To provide supervisory training experience for selected staff at MIPH.
  3. To gain fresh ideas and perspective from interns entering or re-entering the field.
  4. To support MIPH capacity while providing assistance with project work, and for MIPH to learn about potential new employees.

Process

The following process will guide and direct the internship program at MIPH.
  1. Program objectives will be communicated to MIPH staff.
  2. Selected staff will head up and review potential intern sources for formal communication. This will include, but not be limited to, the following: University of Minnesota School of Public Health, St. Cloud State University, Gustavus Adolphus College, Winona State University, University of St. Thomas, College of St. Catherine, Minnesota State University, Mankato and University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
  3. Selected and interested staff will be trained on the basic components of the internship program, and the opportunity to be an internship site coordinator and supervisor.
  4. The process for recruiting interns will be posted on the website and appropriate other internship sources.
  5. A generic profile of internship expectations will be placed on the website and in hard copy available for interested parties. This will include full-time versus part-time, specific types of projects, seasonality of the work, and general duties as well as expectations.
  6. An internship annual calendar will be set one year in advance.
  7. Selected internship coordinator will communicate with the Leadership Coordinating Teams and MIPH Management Team to provide monitoring and adjustment recommendations.
