Minnesota State Epidemiological Profile
Curious about the levels of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use in your county? Interested in the consequences of that use, such as alcohol-related motor vehicle fatalities and narcotics arrests? These data are now readily available in one convenient location.
Minnesota's State Epidemiological Outcomes Workgroup** has developed an interactive website devoted to alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) consumption and consequence statistics. Substance Use in Minnesota, www.sumn.org, includes over 50 indicators from ten state data sources. The purpose of the website is to provide a one-stop-shop for information that can be used by communities for planning, monitoring, and evaluation.
Users can search statistics by location (state, region, and county) and by topic. The website also includes links to community ATOD resources, a reading room, and tips sheets and tutorials on how to find, analyze, interpret, incorporate and communicate data. Features currently under development include: mapping, bar charts, trend graphs, and a data by demographic search tool.
Substance Use in Minnesota will be updated as new years of data and new indicators become available. User feedback is important for improving the site's utility and navigational ease. The Feedback and Contact Us links on the home page allow visitors to make comments, provide suggestions, and ask questions.
** The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has funded states, territories and tribes across the United States to promote data driven decision-making in the substance abuse prevention system, either through a State Epidemiological Outcome Workgroup (SEOW) or through a Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF SIG). Alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) consumption and consequence data are being compiled for use in assessment, planning, priority setting, and evaluation. The Minnesota Institute of Public Health, an active member of the Minnesota SEOW, created Substance Use in Minnesota: A State Epidemiological Profile on behalf of the Minnesota Department of Human Services Chemical Health Division.
